Winter is Coming – The Best Things to do in Bruges

Many people say Bruges is at its best in summer when the sun is shining and the trees are green, but we say: “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”! While you’re not guaranteed sunshine and warmth, Bruges is just as magical in the colder months, especially if you’re lucky enough to see the city with a dusting of snow. Wrap up well and explore Bruges in the winter months before returning to Green Park Hotel, a modern, comfortable place to warm up.

Carriage Ride in Market Square

Chances are you’ll find Market Square before anything else in Bruges. This bustling area is at the heart of Bruges and is home to some of the most iconic scenery and architecture in the city. You’ll also see a continuous parade of horses pulling carriages of people enjoying Bruges from a different viewpoint. It’s a perfect family activity or a way to impress the one you love on a romantic weekend away. Enjoy winding cobblestone roads, ancient bridges, the Bruges canals, majestic and cosy squares and much more while your guide gives you some information and tips about our picturesque city.

Bruges Chocolate

Bruges is famous for many things – our rich cultural history, the intricate architecture and design, the beautiful views and a vast array of Belgian beers. However, it wouldn’t be winter in Bruges without trying some of our most famous produce, delicious Belgian Chocolate. Bruges is a chocolate lovers paradise. While exploring the busy city, stop in one of the many chocolate shops for a taste and some treats to bring home. Treat yourself to a hot chocolate like you’ve never experienced before in The Chocolate Café and warm yourself up while you explore.

Groeninge Museum

Winter isn’t all hot chocolate and snow – rainfall is a lot higher at this time of the year and so there are plenty of indoor activities to enjoy while it passes. We recommend taking the time to explore the ancient masterpieces in the Groeninge Museum. Built on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey, the museum gives you a broad selection of Belgian visual art from both local and national artists from the 18th & 19th Centuries. If you’re lucky you might catch one of the fascinating contemporary artists exhibitions too.

Bruges Bell Tower

Another indoor activity that is especially worthwhile if it’s snowing, is to climb the Bruges Bell Tower. The 12th Century tower dominates the city skyline and gives you a true bird’s eye view of the city below. It’s not for the faint of heart however, with 366 steep, narrow, and winding steps to the top but the view from the top is worth the struggle. The tower is 83 metres high and was originally used as a lookout for danger and fires in the city and is now protected as a world heritage site. Once you get to the top, you’ll have a picture-perfect 360-view of the entire city and its surrounds.

Christmas Market in Bruges

Bruges is one of the most special and picturesque places to visit around Christmas with postcard-worthy views and a very special festive atmosphere. The Christmas market is the highlight of the season and people travel from all over the world to experience it for themselves. From 26th November until 9th January (with a short break over Christmas) you’ll find the very best of shopping in Bruges. Buy ornaments, decorations, toys, crafts, and many original and handmade Christmas gifts. Bruges is famous for its food and the market is no different. Try some traditional Belgian waffles, frites, homemade chocolate & sweets, drinks and so much more at this Christmas market to make sure you’re truly in a festive mood.

Accommodation in Bruges

Christmas is such a busy time in Bruges, so hotels are in high demand. City centre hotels are usually more expensive too. Green Park Hotel Brugge is located on the edge of the city and offers you great value accommodation with a short commute to and from the centre of Bruges. Our spacious, modern hotel rooms are ideal to rest up before a long day of exploring or to warm up after a day in the city. Our brasserie serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in stylish surrounds and we recommend sampling a selection of our Belgian beers before bed.
