From Brussels airport to Bruges: Most efficient ways to get in Bruges

If you’re planning a trip to one of the most romantic and picturesque cities in the world, Bruges, you’ll be wondering what are the easiest and most efficient ways to get here. If you’re landing at Brussels Airport, the largest international airport in Belgium, there are a number of ways to get to Bruges, some more expensive or faster than others. Here is our handy guide to travel from Brussels Airport to Bruges.

Travel by Taxi

We’ll start with the fastest way to get between the airport and wherever you want to go in Bruges; a taxi. The distance between the two is approximately 108kms, which should take you 75 minutes by car, depending on traffic. Although taxi is the fastest way to travel it is also the most expensive, with an average cost of approximately 147€ depending on your exact destination in Bruges. It sounds expensive but when shared between four (the usual number of passengers in a standard taxi) it’s not too bad. Taxis at Brussels (BRU) airport don’t have a flat-rate fee, instead, they charge using a meter based on distance and time. You can pick up a taxi very easily at the taxi rank just outside the doors of the arrival hall.

Travel by Car

Another quick way to get between Brussels Airport and Bruges is to hire a car. It will cost more initially but it could save you money on taxis and transport, especially if you are planning to travel further afield during your trip. There are many rental companies offering great rates in the airport, but we always recommend making your reservation before you leave so you can compare the best rates. Also, make sure your excess is covered to avoid a hefty addition to your rental cost. You may need to use google maps or hire a sat nav to easily direct yourself to Bruges and the journey should take just over an hour. There is ample car parking available at Green Park Hotel which you can avail of free of charge when you book your stay our official website.

Travel by Train

The cheapest way to travel from Brussels Airport to Bruges is by train. The IC (Intercity) train takes just a little longer than a car and for a comfortable 85-minute journey, you’ll only pay € 20.90 oneway. The train is ideal for those travelling on a budget or wanting to enjoy some of the gorgeous views of the countryside in the comfort of the IC trains clean and spacious carriages. The train station is located on Level -1 of the main terminal in Brussels airport. If you are in the arrivals hall you can access it from Level 2 and if you are in the departure hall, you can find it from Level 3. The train runs 24/7 so it’s an easy way to travel between destinations cheaply no matter what time you arrive. If you want to save time, book your tickets online before you arrive and use the e-ticket system. IC trains alternate between a direct line and a line with a change in Brussel-Noord, so if you have a lot of luggage with you, you may want to wait for the direct train.

Travel by Private Transfer

If you like the idea of having a driver waiting for you in the airport, ready to take you safely between Brussels Airport and Bruges, you might consider a private transfer. Welcome Pickups arrange an English-speaking driver to pick you up from the arrival hall with a sign, escort you and your luggage to your waiting vehicle and deliver you safely and in a timely manner to your hotel. He or she can also point out some points of interest or the best places to enjoy a meal in the city along the way. This is especially useful for nervous solo travellers or groups. It will cost approximately €119 each way, day or night for a private transfer.
