Day trips from Bruges to the beach

Bruges is a beautiful city in West Flanders and is also known as the ‘Venice of the North’. It is the perfect destination for a city trip for all travellers who love a mix of culture, shopping and food. Are you staying in Bruges for more than a few days? Then it is a great idea to plan a day trip to one of the nearby coastal cities. There are a lot of beautiful cities nearby where you can enjoy a day at the beach! We have selected a few of our favourites.

Ostend

Ostend is the most famous coastal city of Belgium, also known as the “queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts”. The West Flemish city is situated only 25 minutes by car from Bruges and is a great choice for a day trip to the beach. You can enjoy a walk at the promenade pier, visit the famous Casino, enjoy a show at the Kursaal or watch a horse race at the Hippodrome Wellington. On a really nice day it is lovely to visit one of the many beach bars or go for a swim in the North Sea.

Zeebrugge

Zeebrugge is the coastal city that is the closest to Bruges: only 18 km from the city centre of Bruges. Zeebrugge is known internationally for its modern and large port but is also a great place to spend your day. Are you into fish? Then Zeebrugge is the place to be! The city is sometimes called the ‘capital city of Fish’ and there are many great restaurants that offer delicious fish plates. Just feel like being lazy all day? Not to worry, just find your spot on the beach and enjoy a day in the sun.

Nieuwpoort

Another city that could not miss from our list is Nieuwpoort, situated at a 35-minute drive from Bruges. This municipality is most famous for its shopping and its beautiful harbour. The city is divided into two different parts: Nieuwpoort Beach & Nieuwpoort City. When you are looking to do some shopping then Nieuwpoort City is the place to be. Rather in for some adventure? Visit the Nieuwpoort harbour and look out for the seals!

Cadzand

The odd one out and the last one from our list is Cadzand Beach. This village is not located in Belgium but in the Netherlands. It is the southernmost beach city of the Netherlands and only a 30 minute drive from Bruges. It is a beautiful destination for a day trip to go on a walk on the large beach. Next, Cadzand is also known as a relaxing seaside resort with lots of wellness and therapy activities. Definitely worth a visit when you are staying for a few days in Bruges.
