The fact that Bruges is known as the Venice of the North, is not something new. But have you ever heard about the Flemish primitives or the underground beer pipeline? Let us talk about it!
The Flemish primitives
The Flemish what? The Flemish primitives is a collective name that stands for early Netherlandish painting. It is about the work of artists from the Burgundian and Habsburg Netherlands during the 15th- and 16th-century Northern Renaissance. More specifically artists living in the cities like Bruges, Ghent, Tournai, Brussels and Mechelen. Bruges quickly became the meeting source and place of inspiration for many artists like Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Their world-famous masterpieces can be found in one of the 26 Bruges Museums.
Underground beer pipeline
This pipeline might be the only pipeline that you want to explode when walking in the area. The famous brewery ‘De Halve Maan’ in Bruges started transporting beer underground since September 2016. The beer is transported 3 kilometers underground from the brewery to the bottling plant. It was no longer sustainable for their huge tankers to find their way through the narrow streets of Bruges. The beers that are streaming under the streets of Bruges are ‘Brugse Zot’ and ‘Straffe Hendrik’. Want to try those beers? You can even book a guided tour through the brewery, have dinner, and visit the museum showcasing old brewing techniques at De Halve Maan. It is only a 4-minute walk from the Church of Our Lady. Cheers!
