If you’re planning a trip to Bruges this year, you’ll be wondering what to do here, what to pack and where to find the best shopping. Don’t waste your time googling the answers, we’ve put together a handy list of the most frequently asked questions to save you time. We’ve covered all the main areas but if you can’t find your answers here, don’t be afraid to ask our friendly staff who are always happy to help with advice or recommendations.

Weather in Bruges

One of the first suggestions when you type ‘Bruges’ into Google are queries on the weather. You’ll need to know what to expect so you can pack appropriately for your trip. Lucky for us, the weather in Bruges is mild for most of the year. The summers are warm, without being hot and the winters are cold, without being freezing. We experience moderate rainfall throughout the year, usually in Autumn and Winter. The temperature slowly climbs or drops in the shoulder seasons with no major highs or lows. Remember to pack layers in case it gets cold and an umbrella – because you never know! Bring decent walking shoes as there are a lot of uneven surfaces on our cobbled streets.

Population of Bruges

Bruges population makes up a small percentage of the overall population of Belgium at just over 1%. The approximate population of the city is just 120,000 compared to the 8.3million tourists who visited our city in 2018 - a surge of 900,000 compared to 2017. Our population has only grown slightly since the 1990s. Typically, our ratio of male female residents is fairly even with a slightly higher percentage of females. Our most highly populated age group is our 50-60 year olds, meaning we have a lot of life experience and stories to tell. The nationality of our residents is overwhelming Belgian, with a small percentage of other EU nationals, Asians and Africans.

Shopping in Bruges

As Bruges is very pedestrian-friendly, more so than other European cities, an afternoon spent shopping here is very enjoyable. You will find all the major national and international chains, as well as trendy local boutiques and there are plenty of markets selling everything from antiques to fruit & veg. The most important shopping streets run between the Market Square and the old city gates and all are easily walkable. Each street has its own personality; for example you’ll find brand names on Steenstraat but on Langestraat has many little second-hand and bric-a-brac shops. Don’t forget that most stores are open from Monday to Saturday with Sunday as a rest day.
